It is official now. Women fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force have been allowed by defense ministry to operate the fighter jets. They will be inducted as fighter pilots into the Indian air force from June 2017. The union government has approved a proposal on Saturday to this effect.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha and defence minister Manohar Parrikar have been talking about for some time. The first women fighter pilots would be selected from the batch currently undergoing training at the Air Force Academy.
The decision of the defense ministry is in keeping with the aspirations of Indian women and is in line with contemporary trends in armed forces of developed nations. The women from the IAF are already flying transport aircraft and helicopters.
